AU information: Mal is a clinical psychologist by training and is trying to provide some measure of mental health counseling to the inhabitants of the island. There is a lot of grief counseling going on, as you might imagine. She was on the island on business (the details of which are somewhat obscure; it's rumored that she had some kind of wealthy client who flew her out there for some kind of personal crisis management). After the Lurg broke out, she began offering her services to the refugees and residents of the island.
She's a kind and caring counselor, but outside of work she tends to keep to herself and hasn't made many friends. She does have a secret: three years ago, her husband (who had been suffering from delusional beliefs) had a psychotic break and attempted to kill himself and her by jumping from a hotel window. She tried to save him and nearly succeeded, but in the ensuing struggle he fell to his death. She was cleared of all charges of wrongdoing and the death was ruled an accident, but she still feels profound guilt; she believes she could have done something to save him, to treat his delusions better. She was also the mother of two children who were home with their grandparents, all of whom, she is certain, are dead.
