AU information:

When Tom was a twenty year old cadet in the police academy, his father and adoptive mother were gunned down in the driveway of their San Diego home. His father was also a cop, and while it was never proven, their murders were thought to be related to one of his cases. Tom was devastated, but he had bigger things to focus on—like being left to raise his eighteen month old half-brother, Benny. Their aunt helped Tom take care of his baby brother for the first few years, so he could finish his time at the academy and find a job as a police officer. He wound up taking a job in a small, sleepy, safe town in the hills of California, far from the more dangerous cities he’d grown up in; more than anything, he wanted to keep Benny safe.

And so Tom and Benny made themselves a place in the sleepy town of Sunset Hollow; Tom eventually became one of two or three detectives in the local police force. He’s smart, fiercely protective, has a deep-seated sense of justice, and was well-respected in the community. (This didn’t mean his brother thought he was anything but boring, of course.) He was starting to teach Benny and his friends survival and the way of the samurai (things his father had taught him), when the disease hit. Tom watched the news and read reports, and as he saw it begin to invade his town, he had one thought—keep Benny safe.

To that end, Tom used his connections to find a ship and get himself and Benny onboard. They didn’t know where it was going, and had no idea what would happen to them, but Tom knew California didn’t hold a future for them anymore. They had to take a chance with the unknown if they wanted to survive. It killed him to leave the town he’d spent fourteen years serving and protecting, but for his brother’s sake, Tom packed a backpack and didn’t look back.

Inventory:
-2 pair jeans, 1 pair shorts, 3 t-shirts, 2 safari shirts, 1 pair pajama pants, socks and underwear, 1 windbreaker, 1 pair work boots, 1 San Diego Padres baseball hat (When they left, he wore: 1 pair jeans, 1 t-shirt, 1 safari shirt, 1 windbreaker, work boots and socks, hat)
-Basic toiletries (toothbrush, comb, etc)
-His wallet (containing drivers license, credit cards, cash, pictures of Benny, their parents and 1 picture of a redheaded woman and her daughter-Jessie and Nix Riley)
-Police badge and handcuffs
-Passport
-Tablet and smart phone, containing music, photos, books, etc
-a DVD containing old home videos

IF ALLOWED*:
-His handgun and assorted gear. Which he keeps on him. At all times.
-His katana sword, which he also wears or keeps at hand throughout their trip. He’ll be slightly more relaxed about the weapons once they’re on land, but will keep a close eye on them and only use them as permitted. (Unless he needs them to protect Benny.)

*If Tom can’t have both, the sword is preferred, please!
